Burton Albion’s top scorer is expected to remain with the struggling side until the end of the season, despite reported interest from Derby and Wolves.
With Burton Albion level on points with Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship’s bottom four, news that talismanic midfielder Jackson Irvine has no intention of jumping ship midway through the season could not have come at a better time, as reported by the FourFourTwo Australia.
The seven-time Socceroo moved to the Pirelli Stadium from Ross County in the summer for a club record £250,000, the Burton Mail reports, and has been offered a new deal by the Brewers to ward off interest from elsewhere.
The World Game claims that Championship rivals Wolves and Derby County are interested in pursuing Irvine, who has impressed in a new look attacking midfield role in his first season in English football.
However, the former Celtic youngster confirmed that no official offers have been made for his services and, for now, his focus is ensuring Burton extend their historic stint in English football’s second tier for another season.
“There’s no great rush. I am only six months into a three-year deal. It’s not massively important at the moment,” the 23-year-old told FourFourTwo Australia.
“I’ve committed my long-term future to the club as it is. I’m comfortable and happy where I am.
“If anything was to turn into something tangible, a real offer, things would be addressed at the time through the club and my representatives.”
Whether this prevents Wolves or Derby from making an approach, however, remains to be seen.
Barring the excellent David Edwards, Wolves’ top scoring midfielders are Prince Oniangue and Joao Teixeira with two apiece. However, the former recently returned to France with Bastia on loan while the latter has been heavily tipped to head back to Portugal.
Furthermore, Bradley Johnson and Will Hughes are the only Derby midfielders to hit the net this season, meaning Irvine’s probing forward runs could have come in useful for Steve McClaren.
