Jack Wilshere has told TalkSPORT that Liverpool veteran James Milner is deserving of legendary status. The midfielder is “the best” at doing the fundamentals according to Wilshere, praising Milner’s consistency.

Milner, 36, clocked up a huge 800th club appearance on Wednesday night as Liverpool beat Inter Milan 2-0 in the San Siro. A huge win, the first from and English club away at Inter for the first time in a whopping 18 years.

It was his 275th in Liverpool colours – though the ex-Leeds, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle man is now out of contract at the end of the season. Though talks are underway to extend Milner’s current Reds deal.

Discussing Milner’s landmark appearance against Inter on Wednesday, Wilshere was full of praise for the midfielder he has come up against on a regular basis. He raved about his consistency and behind-the-scenes impact.

“He’s still going strong, he could play every game. I think he is a legend, he has won the Champions League, Premier League. A legend,” Wilshere told TalkSPORT on Thursday afternoon, when discussing the Liverpool ace.

“He is the best at the fundamentals, running, tackling, he takes you places you don’t want to go. He consistently does that. His role off the pitch, in the dressing room, I’d say he helps [Jordan] Henderson a lot.”

Milner is a model professional and it is hard to explain in words the kind of impact he will have in the dressing room. For young players, he is a role model – remaining supremely fit despite his age.

For his fellow senior teammates, he is a voice they can rely on in terms of hardship and certainly, one of the leaders in the Liverpool side. A great attitude, and a player that is still hugely effective on the pitch.

Another 12 months is a no-brainer, even if he only played 10 games next season. Having him in and around the squad makes sense.
