Jack Wilshere: I definitely won’t be changing my game

The Arsenal and England midfielder has been discussing his approach – and his unwillingness to change it!

Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere says he can never change his style of play, according to Sky Sports.

Indeed, the 23-year-old plays an ambitious, aggressive game, constantly looking to take people on with the ball and producing intense tackles.

That increases the risk of fitness issues for the injury-prone midfielder, especially as he doesn’t look to avoid tough challenges.

But the Arsenal man insists, despite considering a different approach, it’s not something he will ever look to change.

Wilshere told reporters: “When I was injured, I read a few people who said that. I thought maybe they are right, maybe I should change it a little bit.

“As soon as I came back on my first game, naturally I wanted to pick up the ball up and run with it, I can’t change that. I can work on a few things maybe.

“You look at your best dribblers in the world – Messi, Iniesta – they keep the ball very close to them so maybe that’s something I can work on but I definitely won’t be changing my game.”

As Opta stats show, Wilshere averaged the third-highest rate of dribbles attempted per game at Arsenal during last season’s Premier League, despite his lack of minutes played.

Only Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain attempted more, while only the duo combined with Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla have won more dribbles per game for the Gunners than the 23-year-old.

Wilshere has always been an enigma, of course, although he can certainly produce for Arsenal – especially in big games. The young midfielder also tends to up his game for England. But is he right to be so adamant about his style of play?
