Jack Wilshere has had some high praise for one young Premier League midfielder who has been catching the eye of Manchester United scouts this season.
Last summer, Manchester United chose not to bring in a new midfielder, instead focusing on other areas of the squad.
The club prioritised attacking additions, signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but Ruben Amorim is expected to turn his attention to midfield options in 2026.
A few names have stood out since the start of this season. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson are both performing well and fit the Ineos model, young players in their early twenties with room to grow.
It has not been decided yet which midfielder will top United’s list. However, recent success stories like Mbeumo and Cunha suggest they might favour players with Premier League experience, which could help them settle quickly at Old Trafford.
Wharton and Anderson will be under continued observation by United as the season goes on, and it would not be surprising if more names enter the conversation before any decisions are made.
Jack Wilshere highlights Man Utd target Elliot Anderson

Anderson caught the eye during United’s 2-2 draw with Forest earlier this season, giving a strong showing in front of Amorim.
The 23-year-old’s physical presence stood out, and he looked sharp on the ball, helping to drive Forest forward by switching play and starting attacks.
He has been a consistent performer for Forest this season, earning praise from several former players. That form has fuelled talk that he could be a long-term replacement for Casemiro.
Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, now the manager of Luton Town, expressed his admiration for Anderson’s performance this year in a statement to The Mirror.
“[Elliot] Anderson next to him, I think he’s outstanding. I really do.
“He’s everywhere, trying to play forwards, he loses the ball, he tries to win it back. A lot of quality,” Wilshere stated.
Man Utd face battle with four clubs for Anderson
According to a separate report from The Mirror, United may have to fend off interest from four other Premier League clubs in the race to sign Anderson.
This follows his £35 million move from Newcastle to Forest just a year ago.
It is believed that Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea are all showing interest in the midfielder.
Beyond them, Newcastle are reportedly considering a move to bring him back to St. James’ Park.
