Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has responded to Jamie Carragher’s claim around former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and iconic manager Arsene Wenger.

The debate around who is the Premier League’s best ever manager continues to rage with Pep Guardiola winning his sixth league title and firmly cementing himself in the conversation.

Well, speaking on The Overlap, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was asked to rank his top five managers in the league’s illustrious 32-year history.

The former Liverpool defender struggled to think of his answer but eventually decided that the German manager, who won one league title at Anfield, ranked higher than Arsene Wenger, who won three league crowns in England.

Wilshere responds to Carragher’s claim

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who was given his first chance at the Gunners under the French manager, bit back at Carragher’s claim that Klopp ranks higher than Wenger.

Writing on X, the English midfielder said: “Klopp, unbelievable how he transformed Liverpool but Arsene’s legacy in the Premier League is second to none.

“Sorry Jamie but you are miles off it, please don’t be so biased and respect Arsene and what he done over a longer period, including leading the only team in the Premier League to be invincible.

“Everyone appreciates what Pep has done and changed the way we see football in this country but don’t forget [Wenger] had a similar effect when he came in 96!

“You know that era better than me and witnessed it, so let’s not forget that!”

Wenger vs klopp

Wenger was appointed at Arsenal and was tasked with the challenge of taking on Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United and he succeeded, massively. During his stint in North London, Wenger won three Premier League titles and was 90 minutes away from lifting the Champions League trophy for the Gunners.

As for Klopp, the German was brought into Anfield with the club struggling and had yet to win the Premier League title. However, Klopp came in and turned the club’s fortunes around and won their first league title in the modern era and the German got his hands on the Champions League trophy in 2019.

Comparing the two is certainly difficult but it’s hard to move past Wenger as the better manager with the better legacy in England’s top league. Klopp turned Liverpool into consistent title contenders but Wenger won three league titles for the Gunners and he is surely the better Premier League manager.
