Zak Swanson has completed a permanent move to League One side Portsmouth from Arsenal – prompting the likes of Jack Wilshere and numerous Arsenal Under-21 players to react to the defender’s Instagram post.
Swanson, 21, leaves Arsenal after 15 years with the club – joining at the tender age of just six. While he made the bench on numerous occasions for the first team, Swanson failed to make a senior appearance for the Gunners.

Instead, he was a regular at Under-21 level – playing 32 times for the Premier League 2 side. That, and a short loan in the Netherlands with Masstricht. He now finally leaves Arsenal, to join a strong Portsmouth side.
Swanson confirmed the news with a post on Instagram. He underlined his delight at joining Pompey, who will be looking at finishing in the third tier’s top six – after a tenth-placed finish during the 2021-22 campaign.
Swanson completes Portsmouth move: Wilshere, Arsenal players react
A superb move for the League One side, and for Swanson. A player with incredible versatility, able to play at right-back, left-back or in the middle of the defence. For Swanson, he will now get regular game time.
It will give him the chance to show both Arsenal, and other clubs, what he is capable of. His career, at least at senior level, starts now. Swanson can begin to build with the added ingredient of regular football.
Responding to his Instagram post, Jack Wilshere wished the defender luck – as did a number of his Arsenal Under-21 teammates, some of whom who have left including Harry Clarke.
