Bournemouth defender Jack Simpson has told the Daily Echo that links to Rangers over the summer were ‘nice’, and he never expected interest from the Ibrox club.

The Gers underwent a full-scale overhaul this summer, as 24 players left the club and 15 arrived as new manager Steven Gerrard was backed with funds to improve his side.

One of the key areas for Gerrard to improve as in the heart of defence, and he ended up landing four centre backs as Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley all moved to Ibrox.

After securing Goldson and Katic, Gerrard wanted to bring in a young defender on loan, and Worrall’s move from Nottingham Forest filled that role – but he wasn’t their top target according to reports.

The Daily Record reported that Rangers wanted to bring in young Bournemouth defender Jack Simpson on loan, but the Cherries wouldn’t let him go due to a lack of depth in their own squad.

Worrall headed to Glasgow instead weeks later, and the Bournemouth talent has now discussed the situation surrounding Rangers’ interest in landing his signature this summer.

Simpson has told the Daily Echo that it was ‘nice’ to be linked with Rangers, and didn’t really expect interest from Gerrard’s side, adding that it was ‘strange’ to be at the heart of a transfer rumour.

Simpson added that he was aware of the interest but just focused on his development with Bournemouth, and believes he may have opportunities to play under Eddie Howe this season.

“It was nice and I didn’t really expect it if I’m honest,” said Simpson. “It was a bit strange but it doesn’t really matter now because I’m here and I’m a Bournemouth player. I was aware of it but just got on with my training and if it happened, it happened.”

“For me it was just important to make sure I developed as a player and it wasn’t really in my control. I am happy to be here and be a part of this squad because it’s not a big squad and there will be opportunities to play,” he added.
