Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady has been talked up by Jack Ross.
Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks winger Aiden McGeady can return to make a huge impact at the Stadium of Light.
McGeady was a key signing for former boss Simon Grayson last summer, having worked together at Preston North End with great effect.
The 32-year-old wide man, formerly of Celtic, Spartak Moscow and Everton, had rebuilt his career at Deepdale, and he did post a decent record of seven goals and five assists for Sunderland in the Championship last season.
However, a calf injury has kept McGeady out of league action this season, and the Irish international could be a welcome addition to Sunderland’s League One squad as they chase promotion.
Now, manager Ross has commented on his absent wide man, telling the Glasgow Evening Times that he hopes McGeady will be available sooner rather than later after a number of setbacks.
Ross noted that he knows all about McGeady’s quality having played against him before, and believes he can have a big impact and strengthen the Sunderland side when he makes his return.
“His quality is proven, undoubtedly at a higher level than this,” said Ross. “I know that from playing against him from when I was a player and obviously the level that he’s played at in his career since, so when he comes back he just strengthens us again,”
“He’s been injured since pre-season. He has a calf injury, so he isn’t back to fitness, he’s had a few setbacks with it. But hopefully he can continue to make good progress and he’ll be available sooner rather than later,” he added.
With Charlie Wyke back to full fitness and McGeady approaching a return, the duo could give Sunderland the ammunition to really mount a push for the League One title – and Black Cats fans should be hugely excited with Ross’s comments.
