Sunderland are set to get their play-off campaign underway with a match against Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light.

Jack Ross has told the Chronicle that even opposition players have praised the atmosphere that Sunderland’s supporters have created at times this season.

Sunderland have proven a difficult opponent to get past at the Stadium of Light, where they are backed by a vociferous crowd.

And Ross claims that Sunderland’s supporters have even been praised by opposition players this term.

“Yeah, we’ve had some really enjoyable occasions this season – both away and at home as well.

“Some of the games at home – Charlton the first game of the season, off the top of my head, the recent match against Doncaster, and even the recent match against Portsmouth – the atmosphere has been terrific and the players and opposition have commented on it after the game.”

Sunderland boast the fifth best home record in the division, having lost just once in front of their own fans all campaign.

The Black Cats will need the backing of their supporters again tomorrow, as they face Portsmouth in the first-leg of their play off tie.

Sunderland go into the promotion deciding fixtures in poor form, and Portsmouth should pose a tough obstacle to get past.

Pompey are the league’s best away side by a considerable distance, and have won 13 of their 23 matches on the road over the regular season.

When Sunderland and Portsmouth met back in April at the Stadium of Light the match finished as a 1-1 draw.
