Celtic’s Lewis Morgan showed promise for Sunderland yesterday.

Sunderland picked up a second straight win in League One to boost their promotion hopes, beating Bristol Rovers 2-0 away from home on Saturday.

The Black Cats ended a concerning run of draws by hammering Gillingham in midweek, and picked up another win on Saturday afternoon.

Full back Luke O’Nien fired Sunderland into the lead during the first half, before wide man Aiden McGeady scored a fine free kick to make it 2-0.

The result leaves Sunderland just two points off automatic promotion with a game in hand over second-placed Barnsley, with hope now starting to build once again at the Stadium of Light.

One player who made a real impact late on against Bristol Rovers was playmaker Lewis Morgan, who came on as a 67th minute substitute for Duncan Watmore.

The Celtic loanee has been struggling for starts since his deadline day move to Wearside, but his promising cameo on Saturday may just force manager Jack Ross to give him regular football.

Many expected Morgan to be a key player given that he worked with Ross at St Mirren, but he has yet to really get going during his time with Sunderland.

Ross has now told The Chronicle that he thinks fans got to see how good Morgan is on Saturday, praising him for the way he travels with the ball whilst noting that he’s desperate to play all the time.

“Lewis is a good player and he wants to play all the time,” said Ross. “That’s partly why he came out on loan, and partly because that’s just how he is. He travels with the ball and he is very quick, I’ve seen it time after time. I’m glad that when the game opened up today, the supporters saw what he will bring to us,” he added.
