Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Sunderland Echo that Duncan Watmore could feature for his side sooner rather than later.

Watmore has been out with injured for months, but is edging closer to full fitness now.

The winger has returned to Sunderland training in recent times, and is set to play for the development squad in the coming days.

And Ross says that Watmore is in a good frame of mind ahead of his comeback.

“I had a long chat with him on Friday and the good thing is this week will be his sixth week of training with us,” Ross said.

“That gives him a really solid platform, not just physically but psychologically, to say, ‘right I’m back’. I was keen to do that no matter what happened on a Saturday.”

Watmore’s return to Sunderland’s first-team should improve their attacking threat over the second half of the campaign.

Sunderland already appear to be one of the most dangerous sides in League One, but they could be even better with Watmore involved.

The Black Cats’ nine-game winning run did come to an end at the weekend, as they were unable to get past the challenge of Wycombe Wanderers.

Ross’ side could only pick up a 1-1 draw in front of their own fans, but they remain in the top two.
