Sunderland head into their match with Fleetwood Town knowing that only a win will be good enough.

Jack Ross has suggested to the Chronicle that he could take Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady out of his starting line-up this evening.

Sunderland are due to take on Fleetwood Town and they have to win to keep their slim chances of earning promotion alive.

Ross’ side may have to pick up the three points without their star man though.

McGeady is nursing an injury problem, after breaking a bone in his foot.

And it could be that playing twice in a week is simply too much to ask of the Sunderland wide-man.

“It’s quite a quick turnaround Saturday-Tuesday, so we will see how he is,” McGeady said.

“He won’t play if there is any doubt either in his mind or my mind.

“We also have to take medical advice and make sure we don’t do any damage to him.”

If Sunderland are without McGeady it will be a blow to their attacking threat.

McGeady has been Sunderland’s most productive outlet out wide this season, with his trickery making him one of the most feared players in the division.

If Sunderland and Portsmouth both fail to win tonight, Barnsley will be promoted.
