Sunderland defender Adam Matthews missed out on playing at Wembley.
Matthews has been out with injury recently, but looked on course to make it back in time to play at Wembley.
However, the full-back suffered a recurrence of the injury at the last minute, which caused him to miss out.
And Matthews is now set to be sidelined for Sunderland’s next match, which comes against Accrington Stanley on Wednesday evening.
“Adam Matthews remains out and obviously didn’t make Sunday,” he said.
“He actually had a recurrence of his hamstring injury on Friday. We actually thought he was going to be fit for Sunday but then had a recurrence in training.”
Sunderland ended up losing the Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth on penalties, in a disappointing defeat.
The Black Cats have not hidden their frustration at losing at Wembley, but they will need to focus again on league matters.
Ross’ side are locked in a battle for promotion, as they look to leapfrog Barnsley in second place.
Sunderland are currently in fourth place in the League One table, but they do have games in hand over their nearest rivals.
