Lee Cattermole is set to miss Sunderland’s next game at the weekend.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross applauds the travelling fans during the FA Cup first round match between Port Vale and Sunderland on November 11, 2018 in Burslem, England.

Jack Ross has admitted to the Sunderland Echo that Lee Cattermole has not recovered as well as initially hoped.

Cattermole was expected to be back for Sunderland’s game against Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.

However, the Black Cats midfielder is still on the treatment table, with his injury proving to be worse than expected.

And Ross said: “Lee has not recovered as well as we’d hoped.

“He’s still resting at the moment so won’t be available this weekend.

“We’re hoping another period of rest will help him. He’s obviously frustrated because he’s desperate to keep playing because he’s had such a good season to date.”

Cattermole now faces a fight to win his place in Sunderland’s team back, when he is fit.

Sunderland have been in superb form of late, winning nine matches in a row.

Max Power and George Honeyman have both caught the eye in recent weeks, with Sunderland going from strength to strength.

The Wearsiders are now in the automatic promotion spaces in League One.

And when Cattermole does return, Ross’s side should only be stronger for his inclusion.
