Sunderland are said to be closing in on Will Grigg and another target could arrive soon.

Jack Ross has suggested that Sunderland are close to two signings in the Sunderland Echo.

Ross has made no secret of his desire to recruit at Sunderland this month, but Jimmy Dunne is the only new arrival so far.

The Black Cats are still working to get further transfers done though, and Ross is expecting progress to be made soon.

He said: “We are continuing to work hard on strengthening the squad in a couple of areas.

“We are making progress on them. I am in first thing Wednesday and I would hope through the course of tomorrow I am going to be able to push things along further.

“Irrespective of that, if that is not bringing the ones identified to begin with then it is going to the next ones as time is marching on as we head towards the end of the month.”

Ross has already confirmed that one of Sunderland’s targets is Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg.

Grigg has a prolific scoring record at League One level, and could enhance Sunderland’s attacking threat for the remainder of the campaign if he was to join.

Sunderland and Wigan are currently negotiating over a fee, with both sides battling to get a good deal.

The Black Cats are currently in third place in the League One table, and if they can strengthen further in January that may be enough to help them secure an automatic promotion spot.
