Sunderland manager Jack Ross has spoken highly of goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin to The Northern Echo.

McLaughlin joined Sunderland in the summer transfer window after leaving Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Black Cats, and Sunderland manager Ross has spoken highly of him.

Ross told The Northern Echo about McLaughlin: “Jon’s been very, very good this season. A goalkeeper was a priority for me when I came to the club and he was a priority as an individual.

“He was somebody I was really keen to bring to the club and I fought hard to make sure we brought him.

“He’s justified that. He’s at a stage of his career and his life that it’s not fazing him playing for a club of this size and his performance levels have been consistently very good.”

Meanwhile, Lee Cattermole has explained why he did not leave Sunderland in the summer transfer window.

The 30-year-old defensive midfielder has been on the books of the Black Cats since the summer of 2009 when he joined from Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £6 million.

Cattermole told The Chronicle: “Last year as a club we were nowhere near where we should have been, and it was horrible.

“At first I felt I needed a change but the staff who came in had a very similar idea about football and the longer it went on the more I wanted to stay. I didn’t want to go out on such a bad note after nine years.”

Pushing for promotion

Sunderland are third in the League One table at the moment with 23 points from 12 matches, just four points behind leaders Portsmouth.

The Black Cats have one of the strongest squads in League One and will be confident of clicking automatic promotion to the Championship.
