Sunderland centre-back Jack Baldwin has played a key role at the Stadium of Light since joining.
Baldwin joined Sunderland from Peterborough United in the previous transfer window, and he has immediately come into the Black Cats’ starting line-up.
And although Ross admits that Baldwin does make errors, he doesn’t mind the 25-year-old having the occasional mishap.
“His performance levels have been very good,” Ross said.
“He’s one of those in the category that we brought in, a player who can help us win promotion but who we also feel could actually come with us on the whole journey.
“He’s still young, he makes mistakes at times but his general play, his commitment, his quality on the ball, is very good.
“He’s playing on his wrong side in effect, but he’s shown he’s quite happy using his left foot as well, playing out.
“He’ll make mistakes because he’s taking on the responsibility to do that but that’s why I don’t mind if he shanks one now and again.”
Baldwin actually has a chance to show his former employers what they are missing later tonight.
The centre-back is set to start for Sunderland against Peterborough at the Stadium of Light later.
Baldwin was sold by Posh due to his tendency to make errors, with Peterborough boss Steve Evans preferring a more no-nonsense approach to defending.
Peterborough are currently one place ahead of Sunderland in the League One table, but the Black Cats could reduce the gap down to one point with a win tonight.
