The Sunderland betting market remains unsettled.

Leicester caretaker Manager Michael Appleton reacts during the Premier League match between Swansea City and Leicester City at Liberty Stadium on October 21, 2017 in Swansea, Wales.

Michael Appleton’s latest stint as bookies’ favourite for the Sunderland manager’s job did not last long. The Leicester City assistant boss led the Sky Bet market (with odds of 7/2) for a matter of hours on Tuesday evening.

But by Wednesday morning he was back down to 5/1, alongside the Shrewsbury Town manager Paul Hurst.

Jack Ross manager of Alloa Athletic waves during the Betfred League Cup Group match between Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic at Stark's Park on July 30, 2016 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.

And that has seen a new (old) front-runner emerge in Jack Ross, the St Mirren boss who is now odds-on (10/11) to take charge at the Stadium of Light.

The Daily Record reported on Monday that Ross has already held talks with Sunderland, as well as Championship side Ipswich Town. And, interestingly, the 41-year-old is also odds-on (8/13) for the latter club’s vacancy.

Ross steered St Mirren away from relegation in his first season in Paisley, before leading the Saints into the top flight as champions this campaign.

Meanwhile, a couple of former Sunderland employees, Alex Rae and Chris Coleman, are now 6/1 to return to Wearside.

Should Sunderland give Ross the job?
