Sunderland could make a signing early in the January transfer window.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told The Sunderland Echo that the club could be making a new signing very early in January, with work on a deal underway.
The Black Cats may have lost 3-1 at Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon, but they remain in a strong position given that they sit third in the League One table, only four points off an automatic promotion spot.
Sunderland should at least be in the play-off mix under Ross, but a couple of calculated January additions could make all the difference in the second half of the season.
Even after 15 summer signings, Sunderland could still stand to add a couple more players, and Ross may have just given an exciting update ahead of January.
Ross has today told The Sunderland Echo that Sunderland have been working on one particular deal, and hope to get it over the line very soon.
Ross also suggested that beyond that deal, Sunderland’s future deals may depend on injuries and possibly even departures, but one particular deal is a major priority.

“I would hope that we might have one in early part of January,” said Ross. “There is one we have been working on, I am hoping we can get in. If it does go through then I would imagine it would be at the beginning of the month. Beyond that, it will be maybe dependant on squad wise, injury wise, etc. There is one which is a priority for us, hopefully we can get in right at the beginning of the month,” he added.
Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland has emerged as a target of late, and having worked with Ross at St Mirren, it would be little surprise if he is the top choice.
