Benjamin Kimpioka impressed during Sunderland’s pre-season, but is yet to be seen since the competitive action started.
Sunderland have handed changes to a number of their young players so far this season, with many of their prospects benefitting from Ross’s faith in youth.
However, Kimpioka has not been seen, despite an impressive pre-season.
Kimpioka’s most memorable moment in Sunderland’s friendly matches was when he scored against Hartlepool United, in a game were he had Black Cats fans talking about his potential.
The Swede was expected to be given game time this season, but he is yet to feature in a match-day squad.
And Ross has revealed that injury has been keeping the youngster out, rather than any questions over his ability.
He said: “He’s had some injury issues as well. He suffered concussion from a head injury in training with the under-23s, then he had a muscular injury last week. His progress has been a bit impinged recently, that again has restricted what we have in forward areas.”
Kimpioka will hope that he can force his way into Sunderland contention, when he does return to full fitness.
Sunderland have started the season well, but Kimpioka could bolster their options on the wing or up-front.
Sunderland are next in action tonight, when they take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup.
