Ross is said to have held talks over the Sunderland and Ipswich Town vacancies.

St Mirren manager Jack Ross is the new favourite to succeed Chris Coleman at Sunderland – although the latter is also in the running, with bookmaker Sky Bet.

Ross went from 5/1 to 2/1 on Monday, after the Daily Record reported that Sunderland, along with Ipswich Town, have held talks with the 41-year-old.

However, he remains odds on to be the next Ipswich boss.

Ross has leapfrogged previous favourite Alex Rae (5/2) in the Sunderland betting, with Michael Appleton (9/2) and Coleman (6/1) also prominently placed.

Coleman was sacked after confirmation of Sunderland’s relegation from the Championship less than a month ago.

However, at his first press conference as Mackems owner on Monday, Stewart Donald swerved any blame and pinned it instead on his predecessor Ellis Short.

According to Donald, Coleman will be considered for the Stadium of Light vacancy.
