Sunderland are closing in on Burnley defender Jimmy Dunne.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Sunderland Echo that the club are closing in on the signing of a new defender, believed to be Burnley’s Jimmy Dunne.
The Black Cats were in Checkatrade Trophy action on Tuesday night, hammering Newcastle Under-21’s 4-0 at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland continue to impress under Ross, but he has been looking for a new defensive signing for some time now in an attempt to bolster his hopes of promotion back to the Championship.
He does have a number of defenders at his disposal already, but Ross has been strongly linked with a deal for Burnley’s Dunne in recent days.
The 21-year-old Irishman has spent the first half of the season out on loan with Scottish side Hearts, but his stint in Edinburgh ended earlier this month.
Dunne, formerly of Manchester United, is heading back to Turf Moor, but will almost certainly be loaned out again in order to gain experience elsewhere.

Ross was asked about Dunne after Tuesday’s game with Newcastle, and whilst he stopped himself short of confirming it was Dunne arriving at the Stadium of Light, he did hint that a deal should be done today.
“I would hope that in the next 24 hours we would be able to confirm an addition defensively,” said Ross. “I’ve always said, until it’s done, dusted, registered [I’ll be cautious] but I’m hopeful that will be the case,” he added.
