Jack Ross delivers update on future of Elliot Embleton at Sunderland

Sunderland have loaned out Elliot Embleton over the first half of the season.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Chronicle that Elliot Embleton’s future at the Stadium of Light is still firmly up in the air.

Embleton has been loaned out by Sunderland to Grimsby Town, and he has gone on to impress in League Two.

The midfielder has been one of Grimsby’s best players so far this term, with Mariners fans often praising his displays.

Embleton is due to return to Sunderland in January, but Ross has suggested that the youngster could be relocated.

He said: “We’ll sit with him and agree what’s best. I wouldn’t bring him back if he’s not going to get gametime here, because that’s to the detriment of him in general.

“And also, selfishly for me, I want an Elliot Embleton in my squad who has maybe played 40 first team games, because then he’s better equipped to deal with it.

“We’ve not made a decision either way, if he did continue to play elsewhere for the rest of the season I don’t think it would be a bad thing.”

Embleton has made nine appearances in League Two this season, scoring once.

He is highly regarded at Sunderland, but breaking into Ross’s first-team is not an easy task.

Sunderland are in excellent form, and have forced their way into the automatic promotion spaces in League One.

The Black Cats are unlikely to want to make wholesale changes in January, which could mean that Ross feels that loaning Embleton out again is the best course of action.
