Jack Ross has confirmed to the Northern Echo that the signing he wants to make on deadline day for Sunderland is to bring in a striker.

Ross has been chasing a front man for much of the summer so far, and he still wants another forward at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have brought in Charlie Wyke and Jerome Sinclair, who can lead the line so far this transfer window.

But Ross is keen for another striker to be added, to give competition for places.

He said: “Ideally, we would like another one in the forward area because it would give us four,” said the Sunderland boss, “If you break us down positionally, I know it sounds very old-fashioned, but we’ve probably got two for every position barring the strikers.

“If we had another one in and around that it would help, but I think we’ve done really well to get to this stage of the season with the results we’ve had, knowing what we’ve been missing from the squad. That’s encouraging, and gives you a bit more comfort if the window closes and we are where we are now.”

Sunderland’s other striking option, currently, is Josh Maja, who has enjoyed a fine start to the campaign.

Maja looks likely to retain his place up-front for the Black Cats, regardless of who they sign on deadline day.

Sunderland have been linked with a whole host of strikers, although the identity of Ross’ final choice is not known.

The Black Cats must sell players before they buy a striker, as they need to cut their wage bill down.
