Sunderland manager Jack Ross has admitted to The Northern Echo that he would understand if clubs are looking at Josh Maja.

According to The Northern Echo, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Millwall all are interested in signing Maja from Sunderland in the January transfer window.

The 19-year-old forward is playing well for the Black Cats at the moment and is out of contract at the League One club next summer.

Sunderland boss Ross had admitted that he would understand if clubs are looking at Maja, but he is confident that the youngster will not leave.

Ross told The Northern Echo about Maja: “I suppose with Josh’s situation, he’s fit at the moment and out of contract at the end of the season, that will be a factor for potential suitors and I get that.

“That’s the nature of the beast and if they’re interested then they might not show their hand just yet, why would they?

“We are still confident that Josh and Lynden will stay at the club. There’s nothing in my planning that thinks they won’t be there.

“Equally I have been surprised before in football but at the moment I am confident everything will remain in place.”

Sunderland stay

Maja is one of the best forwards in League One, and Sunderland need to keep hold of the teenager beyond January to guarantee a top-two finish in the League One table this season.

The 19-year-old forward has made 18 starts and two substitute appearances in League One for Sunderland so far this season, scoring 12 goals in the process, according to WhoScored.
