Jack Ross’s Sunderland will face Bradford City in League One this weekend.
The Black Cats will take on Bradford away from home at the Northern Commercials Stadium in League One on Saturday afternoon.
Ross has suggested that 23-year-old midfielder O’Nien may not be fit due to illness, and has revealed that he had to send the summer signing home from training this week.
The Sunderland boss told The Northern Echo: “Luke is still ill, but he’s probably the other one that will be closest (for Saturday’s game). He came in (yesterday) morning, but he wasn’t right so we had to send him home.”

Despite his illness, O’Nien reported for training this week, and that underlines just how committed the former Watford and Wycombe Wanderers midfielder is to the Sunderland cause.
The midfielder has made five appearances in League One for Sunderland so far this season, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
The Black Cats are fourth in the League One table at the moment with 20 points from 11 matches, seven points behind leaders Portsmouth.
Sunderland will fancy their chances of picking up all three points from their League One encounter against Bradford this weekend.
