Sunderland manager Jack Ross has suggested to The Chronicle that Josh Maja may not be at the club beyond the January transfer window.

Maja is out of contract at Sunderland at the end of the season, with Premier League trio Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Southampton interested in the 19-year-old forward, according to The Mirror.

Sunderland boss Ross hopes that the youngster is part of his squad until the end of the season, but he has admitted that he has no control over it.

Asked about Maja’s future, Ross told The Chronicle: “There’s no update on Josh’s contract situation. As a manager – and I think the owners know this – I am invested in progressing the club as a whole.

“You have to think in the short-term as well, and I know that Josh will be a player with me until January as a minimum, and I would expect him to be here longer than that although we can’t say that with certainty until everything has been resolved from a contractual point of view. I’ve still got every confidence that he will be here certainly for the foreseeable future.”

Staying at Sunderland

Maja is a very good and promising young forward who has established himself as a key player in Ross’s Sunderland team this season.

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the forward has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 15 League One appearances for the Black Cats so far this season.

With Sunderland aiming to win automatic promotion from League One to the Championship at the end of the season, the Black Cats cannot afford to lose Maja in the middle of the campaign, unless, of course, they bring in a top-quality striker.
