Jack Ross has told the Sunderland Echo that George Honeyman wanted to play against Peterborough United last night, but the Sunderland boss would not pick him.

Honeyman took a knock to the head in training, and he was ruled out of the contest as a precaution.

Sunderland did not want to risk playing Honeyman after he so recently suffered a head injury because of the risks involved.

But if Honeyman could have made the decision himself, he would have played.

Ross said: “George, it was a head knock, protocol around concussion meant he couldn’t play.

“He wanted to play, felt as if he was able to but there is procedures in place now and we have to be respectful of them.

“We will assess him before Saturday.”

Honeyman’s absence for Sunderland may actually leave him fighting for a place again.

Sunderland’s midfield impressed against Peterborough, although the Black Cats were not able to pick up the three points.

Sunderland had the lead twice against Posh, but they were pegged back both times in a 2-2 draw.

The Black Cats’ next match comes against Bradford City at the weekend, when Honeyman could return.
