Adam Matthews joined Sunderland from Celtic in 2015.

Matthews has been on the books of Sunderland since the summer of 2015 when he joined from Celtic for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Record to be worth £2 million.
The 26-year-old Wales international right-back, who had two loan spells at Bristol City during his time at Sunderland so far, is out of contract at the Stadium of Light at the end of the season, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
Sunderland are playing in League One this season after getting relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
Ross has suggested that whether or not Matthews is part of his team next season will depend on the Black Cats winning promotion.
“I like him,” Ross told The Chronicle about Matthews’s future. “I knew Ad from Celtic. What I would say is that in the last couple of months he has shown what he is as a player, he has started getting back to looking like the player I believe he should be.
“We’ve had a couple of conversations and I think it’s to his credit that he has wanted to do that
“If we are playing in the Championship next year, it makes all these conversations [about contracts] easier, but we can’t predict that with certainty at the moment.
“So at the moment there is some uncertainty about how we move forward and how the player moves forward.”

Stats
Matthews made 25 starts and nine substitute appearances in the Championship for Sunderland last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
So far this season, the former Celtic right-back has made 12 starts and one substitute appearances in League One for the Black Cats, according to WhoScored.
