Sunderland defender Adam Mathews came back into Jack Ross’ starting line-up at the weekend.
Matthews has been out injured recently at Sunderland, but he was recalled into Ross’ side’s starting line-up at the weekend.
Sunderland won 1-0 over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, and Ross claims that Matthews is still an important player for the Black Cats.
He said: “Luke [O’Nien]’s really good performances have come out of position (at right-back). It was important to get Adam back because he’s the best full-back we have at the club, in terms of that area.”
Sunderland actually were given a test by AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, despite the visitor’s lowly standing in the table.
The Dons look almost certain to get relegated, but Sunderland were reliant on a moment of individual brilliant from Aiden McGeady to get them over the line.
McGeady cut inside before curling the ball into the top corner to grab Sunderland an important three points.
The Black Cats are now in fourth place in the League One table, but they have games in hand over all their nearest rivals in the race for promotion.
