Sunderland boss Jack Ross has told the Sunderland Echo that Charlie Wyke was frustrated when he came off against Accrington Stanley last night.

Sunderland won 3-0 against Accrington, and Wyke’s performance in the contest earned widespread praise.

The target-man was one of the Black Cats’ stand out performers, as they collected a vital three points.

But Ross admits that the striker was disappointed not to end his wait for a goal.

“Charlie deserved a goal, he was terrific. I was delighted the fans gave him such good backing, his performance level was terrific,” Ross said.

“He was frustrated he hasn’t scored but his overall contribution in winning the game was terrific and he will take great confidence from the reception he got and when he came off the park.”

Wyke has had a difficult first season at Sunderland, after signing in the summer.

The powerful forward has suffered badly with injury, but could have a vital role to play in the run in.

Sunderland are currently three points behind second placed Barnsley, but they have two games in hand.

The Black Cats are next in action against Rochdale on Saturday at Spotland.
