Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady looks likely to miss out on playing tomorrow.

Jack Ross has admitted to the Chronicle that he shouldn’t have played Aiden McGeady for Sunderland last week.

Sunderland were beaten 5-4 by Coventry City at the Stadium of Light and in their desperation they brought on McGeady as a substitute.

The Black Cats were so desperate that they risked McGeady, even though he wasn’t fully fit.

And Ross has admitted that the gamble didn’t pay off, as McGeady is now likely to miss Sunderland’s game against Doncaster Rovers on Friday.

He said: “Aiden (McGeady) is still not training so remains extremely doubtful. We managed to get a little bit of gametime out of him last Saturday but probably shouldn’t have.”

Sunderland have hit a sticky patch at the worst possible time of the season.

The Black Cats are winless in two games, and that has allowed teams around them to pile the pressure on.

Sunderland’s promotion hopes are still in their own hands, but they will have to finish the season very strongly to ensure that they claim a place in the top two.

Sunderland are currently in third place in the League One table, but do have a game in hand over Barnsley and Portsmouth, who are their nearest rivals for automatic promotion.
