Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker reportedly earns just £10,000 per week more than Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell does.
Kyle Walker is one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, perhaps even in Europe, but according to The Telegraph, the England international earns less than £70,000 at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Independent has reported that Manchester City are interested in signing Walker from Premier League rivals Tottenham, and that they are confident of securing the services of the 26-year-old right-back.
While many Tottenham fans will be aggrieved if Walker does decide to leave for Premier League rivals City in the summer transfer window, could anyone actually blame him if he did?
True, Walker is at a wonderful and ambitious club and is adored by the fans, but if City are ready to increase his salary, as reported by The Telegraph, then it would make sense for him to make the switch.
There is a case to be made about Walker being ‘under-paid’. Sunderland have been relegated from the Premier League and will play in the Championship next season, but they will continue to pay Jack Rodwell a weekly salary of £60,000.
According to The Sun, the 26-year-old midfielder earns £60,000 a week at the Black Cats, who did not insert the 40% pay-cut clause in the contract when they signed him like they did with the rest of the players in the squad.
Rodwell is a good player, but Walker is much, much better than him. If the former Everton and City midfielder will continue to earn £60,000 per week even in the Championship, given Walker’s quality and calibre, he deserves much more than the £70,000 he currently gets paid per week.
