Jack Rodwell says that he is already focusing on next season at Sunderland.
Jack Rodwell’s comments to the Chronicle seem to suggest that he is planning on sticking around at Sunderland next season.
The Black Cats are expected to lose a sizeable number of players this summer, following their relegation to the Championship.
The likes of Jermain Defoe, Jordan Pickford and Lamine Kone all look destined to depart the Stadium of Light, while David Moyes will also look to offload many more members of his first-team squad.
However, Rodwell’s comments suggest that he is planning on sticking around on Wearside.
“It’s difficult but we just have to focus on next season now,” Rodwell said, following Sunderland’s latest 5-1 defeat to Chelsea.
“It’s not been the season we wanted, we’re disappointed and feel we’ve let the fans down, we want to give them something to cheer next season.
“No one wants that [relegation] but this is a great club and I’m sure we can bounce back up.
“Now we can focus on having a good summer and coming back raring to go.
“It is a big season for us next season and it is our main focus now.”
Rodwell has struggled at Sunderland ever since making the move to the North East back in 2014.
The central midfielder has not lived up to expectations and he could face a make or break campaign next year, if he does stay with Sunderland.
Rodwell is believed to not have a relegation release clause in his contract, which means that he will continued to be paid £60,000-a-week in the Championship (The Sun).
