Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman has made only one senior appearance for the Black Cats so far.

Jack Rodwell has told the Telegraph that he believes Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman is ready for a first-team chance at the Stadium of Light.

Honeyman has been training with Sunderland’s first team all season, and Rodwell has been impressed by the academy graduate’s efforts.

The former Manchester City man has now suggested that David Moyes should start picking Honeyman – with an FA Cup match against Burnley at the weekend the perfect opportunity to try the youngster out.

“The young players will be needed, I am sure. Why not play the young lads? They are first-team members,” Rodwell said.

“Players like George Honeyman have been champing at the bit to get on because he has been in and around the squad a while now. They will have to chip in, and we have the cup next week so they will be needed.”

Honeyman is yet to play for Sunderland since David Moyes took charge.

The 22-year-old has one senior appearance to his name to date, which came back in 2015.

Honeyman could be in line to start for Sunderland in the FA Cup, as Moyes is likely to making changes for the fixture.

Sunderland’s main priority this season will be to stay in the Premier League, so a cup match could give Moyes the opportunity to rest some of his more senior players.
