Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has not featured under Chris Coleman.

Jack Rodwell of Sunderland passes during the Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Sunderland at Selhurst Park on February 4, 2017 in London, England.

Jack Rodwell has suggested to the Daily Mail that he is fit and ready to play for Sunderland, but he has hinted that he could perform better in central defence.

Rodwell has not featured for Sunderland since Chris Coleman took charge, but he insists he is still available.

And the 26-year-old has suggested that he could be given a new lease of life by playing at centre-back.

He said: “The game has changed a lot. Centre backs now are ball-playing and a lot of midfielders drop in there. I know the position. I’m big enough, I’m quick enough, I’m good in the air. I’ve got the tools.”

Sunderland must now weigh up whether to give Rodwell a chance at centre-back.

Rodwell’s career at the Stadium of Light has been nothing short of a disaster so far, but he has been utilised as a central midfielder in the main.

If Rodwell really does think he could help out at centre-back, then it may just be worth giving him a chance.

The Black Cats have looked so frail at the back this term, that it things could hardly get worse by trying out Rodwell.

And although a return to Sunderland’s first-team for Rodwell is highly unlikely to enthuse supporters, it may worth Chris Coleman giving him a go, as the Black Cats clearly need to try something new to get out of relegation trouble.
