Sunderland are currently bottom of the Premier League table.
Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell
Speaking to the club’s official website, Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell has echoed Jermain Defoe’s comments about the Black Cats having gone backwards.
David Moyes’ team have endured a disastrous start to the campaign, going nine games without a win in the Premier League.
Their poor form continued on Saturday as a last-minute striker from Winston Reid gave West Ham a 1-0 win at the London Stadium.
Their winless start to the season sees them sitting at the bottom of the table with just a point to their name and five points from safety already.

Much has been said about their situation and Rodwell has admitted that they have regressed as a team.
“We probably have gone a bit backwards,” he told the Chronicle.
“It’s not easy when you are chopping and changing all of the time, as players as managers, but that’s no excuse. We have a great manager here and we need to do it on the pitch.”

The Black Cats midfielder has also admitted that this season they will likely have to go to the wire to ensure their Premier League survival again.
The have continually left it late to avoid relegation in recent years, with a succession of various managers having come in to mount a late survival bid.
Last year it was Sam Allardyce’s turn and Rodwell has admitted that Moyes may need to do a similar job this year.
“I would like to say it is still early in the season, but we are getting on to the point now where we need to start really getting back-to-back wins,” he added.
“It will be a fight to the wire. We have done it in the last few seasons and ideally we didn’t want to do it this season, but it looks like it could be another fight for the rest of the season.”
