Aston Villa won the bragging rights as they beat Birmingham City in the Second City derby on Sunday afternoon.

Jack Grealish stated that he had the ‘best day of his life’ after Aston Villa beat Birmingham City 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Second City derby.

In the first half, with the game goalless, the Villa playmaker was attacked by a fan, but he responded by scoring the winning goal in the second half.

It was a scrappy game in the first period, with Anwar El Ghazi having the best opportunity of the match with his shot saved at point-blank range by goalkeeper Lee Camp following Grealish’s clever through ball.

Speaking to Sky Sports Football (10/03/2019) after the match, Grealish issued this classy response to being hit by a fan and then scoring the winning goal.

“Best day of my life,” Grealish told Sky Sports Football. “To come here for the first time, obviously captaining Aston Villa and scoring the winner, it’s what dreams are made of, especially for me being an Aston Villa fan.

“I was just unaware at the time. I think we had a throw-in or corner and I was walking into position and then I just felt a whack around the side of the face. There is rivalry in football, I don’t think there is any place for that really. I just tried to get on with my job in the end and I scored the winner and we come away with three points.”

The game in itself was a cagey affair, with Villa creating the best chances of the game and defending with resilience throughout the 90 minutes.

Centre-back duo Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause produced a stunning display keeping the Blues attacking duo quiet, with Glenn Whelan and the full-backs also producing top quality performances.

In the second half, Dean Smith introduced John McGinn and Andre Green into the action, with the duo providing an extra attacking edge to the match.

As a result, Grealish and his teammates pushed further up the field, with the boyhood Villa fan guiding his shot into the bottom corner to help his team secure all three points.
