Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is said to have made the Reading defender his top target ahead of the January transfer window.

Jaap Stam has responded to a report linking Reading centre-back Liam Moore with a £5 million move to Celtic.

According to the Daily Record, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has made Moore his top target ahead of the January transfer window, having lost Dedryck Boyata, Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic at various points this season.

But Rodgers’ Reading counterpart has insisted the Royals are not looking to sell the 24-year-old.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on during the UEFA Champions League group B match between Celtic FC and Bayern Muenchen at Celtic Park on October 31, 2017 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

“If you want to build a club and go somewhere you’re not going to sell your best players,” said Stam, as quoted by the Reading Chronicle. “If he is mentioned I can understand it because he has the ability to step up.”

Reading have managed to keep most of last season’s successful side together, with Daniel Williams (left at the end of his contract) and Ali Al Habsi (sold for personal reasons) the only notable exceptions.

However, with the beaten play-off finalists currently closer to the relegation places than they are the top six, a move to Celtic could appeal to Moore.

The former Leicester City prospect only signed a new contract in August, though, leaving Reading in a strong position should the Bhoys decide to follow up their alleged interest.
