Reading boss Jaap Stam has commented on speculation linking him with West Ham.
Reading manager Jaap Stam
Reading manager Jaap Stam has told Football.London that he’s aware of rumours linking him with West Ham – and refused to play them down.
Stam, 44, left his role as a coach at Ajax in order to become Reading boss last summer, replacing Brian McDermott in the hot seat at the Madejski Stadium.
The former Manchester United defender was a big-name appointment for Reading, but with a lack of managerial experience, many expected his first season to be one of transition into life in the Championship.
However, Stam has impressed with his work in Berkshire, as he has the Royals on the verge of a Championship play-off place, with Stam’s possession-based approach earning plaudits.
Over the weekend, The Mirror claimed that West Ham United are eyeing up Stam as a possible replacement for current boss Slaven Bilic, who remains under pressure.
With just two points picked up in the last five games, Bilic’s job isn’t safe just yet, and whilst West Ham could choose to back the Croatian, Stam has emerged as a possible candidate should Bilic go.
Reading’s Chris Gunter and Fulham’s Lucas Piazon in action
Now, the Reading manager has told Football.London that he’s aware of the rumours, and didn’t exactly play down the speculation, simply stating that it’s nice to be recognised, and he wants to as far as he can as a manager.
“I’m aware of it, that’s what happens,” said Stam. “What happens next season happens next season. It’s nice to be recognised. I don’t know if it’s true. Everyone wants recognition. I want to go as high as I can,” he added.
Stam’s comments come just days after Reading defender Chris Gunter told the Mirror that he was worried Stam would leave the club, claiming he’s an unbelievable manager who will enjoy a great career – and the Royals just have to hope and pray that his future lies at the Madejski Stadium rather than in East London.
