Reading boss Jaap Stam is preparing to face a ‘very physical’ Leeds United side, spearheaded by Chris Wood.

Reading boss Jaap Stam has told Get Reading that he thinks Leeds United are a ‘very physical’ team ahead of their meeting this weekend.

Stam has guided Reading into a play-off position in his first season in charge following a surprise move from Ajax last summer, and their 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last time out has helped them solidify their top six spot.

The Dutchman will be hoping to pick up some real momentum for the play-offs after some inconsistent results of late, and they can actually jump up a spot in the table with a win this weekend.

The fifth-placed Royals host fourth-placed Leeds United in the Champonship this weekend, and given that Reading are just two points shy of their weekend opponents, a win can take them fourth.

Stam will certainly be looking for revenge over Garry Monk’s men after a frustrating meeting between the two clubs earlier this season, in which Leeds won 2-0 at Elland Road.

That doesn’t tell the whole story though, as Reading had a whopping 77% of possession without scoring, showing just how clinical Leeds can be with Chris Wood in attack.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash, Stam has told Get Reading that he thinks Leeds’ style of play is ‘very physical’, calling on his players to be ready for battle against Monk’s side.

Stam added that Leeds’ key man is striker Wood, who has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, and admitted that Reading will focus on cutting off the supply to the big New Zealand international.

“It’s an important game for both sides. It will be tough. They are a very physical side,” said Stam. “We need everyone at the stadium to help you out in difficult times. Wood needs to have the ball to score so we will look to stop that,” he added.
