Former Liverpool player Don Hutchison thinks his old side will be Manchester City’s closest title challengers this season.
It was Arsenal who finished second behind the Premier League champions last term, while Mikel Arteta’s men recently got the better of them in the Community Shield.
However, Hutchison, speaking on ESPN, has predicted Liverpool to be the runners-up in the 2023/24 campaign, while City once again claim the title.
It is something that Jurgen Klopp would surely be pleased with after his side finished in fifth last season and missed out on Champions League qualification.
On Liverpool, Hutchison said: “I think Liverpool will be so much better this season. I’ve got Liverpool responding. I’ve watched quite a few of their pre-season games.”
He later went on to add: “When you look back at the form guide at the end of last season, the last 10 games, Liverpool were second behind Man City and Arsenal were down in 12th, so I’m expecting big things from Liverpool this season. I’ve got them second.”
Liverpool need to address their midfield to finish second
There is no denying that Liverpool have a good team, especially in attack. In Mohamed Salah, for example, they obviously have one of the best forwards in world football.
Their defence is not too bad either. Virgil van Dijk is a phenomenon and Alisson is incredible between the sticks.
However, at this moment in time, there are concerns about the Reds’ engine room. They have bought Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, but Jurgen Klopp looks like he is one injury away from having a serious problem in that area of the pitch.

Liverpool have lost so many midfielders this summer, with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho recently departing for Saudi Arabia.
If they are not replaced, the Merseyside club could struggle to make the top four this season, let alone come second.
It will be a concern for some supporters but, with the transfer window still open, Liverpool have a few weeks left to resolve the issue.
