Speaking on The Redmen TV YouTube channel, Goal journalist Neil Jones has shared what he’s heard about Renato Sanches and Liverpool.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the Portugal international this summer, and the fanbase have been getting rather excited about the idea of him signing for the club.

However, Jones believes that this isn’t one that seems too likely, with people at Liverpool claiming that the deal doesn’t fit or make sense on numerous levels.

What’s been said?

Jones says that Liverpool’s links to Sanches aren’t nonsense, but people within the club don’t believe that signing him would make much sense.

“I wouldn’t say it’s nonsense, but the Twitter grumblings are louder than they need to be with this one. I think with Renato is that it would have to be a cut-price deal, because it would be seen as a gamble, it will be a gamble. It’s hard to look past that dip he had, and it really didn’t work out at Bayern for him,” Jones said.

“I don’t personally think Liverpool will sign him this summer unless that deal becomes one of those that is too good to turn down. I’ve spoken to people at Liverpool and they’ve said that the cost associated with it and the idea that they’d buy him to not start for Liverpool just doesn’t fit and doesn’t make sense on a few levels.”

Fair

It’s so easy to get excited about each and every transfer rumour, but when you take a step back, some deals just don’t make sense.

Imagine if Liverpool splashed out on Sanches, who wouldn’t be a cheap signing, where would he fit into the squad?

Is he better than Thiago, Jordan Henderson or Fabinho? Probably not, so you’d be spending a massive amount on a player who isn’t even a guaranteed starter.

Liverpool may bring him in if they can get a great deal, but after Lille just one Ligue 1, it’s hard to imagine they’ll let any of their prized assets go cheaply.
