Alasdair Gold has suggested on his own Youtube channel that some at Tottenham Hotspur have concerns over appointing Erik ten Hag, as they wonder how he will be outside of the Ajax model.
Ten Hag has emerged as a leading candidate to get the Tottenham job, as Daniel Levy searches for Jose Mourinho’s successor.
The Dutchman has just a year remaining on his contract at Ajax, meaning the compensation fee to get him shouldn’t be too vast.
But apparently some at Tottenham have concerns that he may struggle when not part of the Ajax model.
“The drawback with him, and I’ve been told this, is that there is a fear that he is ingrained in the Ajax culture,” Gold said.
“How do you translate that when you’re out of that strict structure that you have at Ajax, that can negate how important the manager is. Sometimes it’s a machine where you just step inside it.”
Ajax, of course, style themselves on total football and play the same way all the way through their academy system.
Players and managers have impressed with the Dutch champions previously, only to struggle when outside of their comfort zone.
However, Ten Hag does have some attractive attacking principles and could be a good fit at Tottenham.
Spurs have a collection of skilful players, who would surely thrive under a system which put a precedence on keeping possession.
And, given the other names on the list, Ten Hag looks like potentially the most exciting available option to Tottenham at this time.
