Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Ian McGarry has shared an update on Real Madrid star Raphael Varane’s future amid links to the likes of Manchester United and PSG
The Frenchman has been the subject of plenty of speculation this summer, and it seems as though he could be on his way out of the Bernabeu, but McGarry claims to have been told by someone close to Varane that he wants to stay in the Spanish capital.
However, amid a number of ongoing financial issues in La Liga, his wage demands are proving to be a bit of a stumbling block.
What’s been said?
McGarry shared an update on Varane.
“Varane is an interesting subject on the basis that he obviously has a problem with a renewal at Madrid. From what I’ve heard I don’t necessarily think he wants to leave Madrid, however, he is playing hardball and his representative is as well with regards to a new contract. There is a strong interest from Manchester United in a player who at 28 and with the experience he has would probably cost half of what they paid for Harry Maguire,” McGarry said.
“However, it is also the case that I’ve been told by someone close to Varane that he would definitely prefer to stay at Madrid and sign a new contract, but with wages at £300,000, which is what he’s asking for, they’re going to be the biggest issue because obviously he’s at that time of his career where he wants to earn the maximum.”

Big boost
Real Madrid could really do without losing Varane this summer, so hearing that he wants to stay is a big boost.
Of course, finances are an issue, but when you’re a club the size of Madrid with a player as important as Varane, you have to find a way.
Just imagine how catastrophic it would be for Los Blancos to lose Varane and Sergio Ramos in the same summer, that’s something Florentino Perez simply can’t allow to happen.
