Bryan Gil has revealed that some people at Tottenham Hotspur have told him that he must gain some weight.
Gil joined Spurs for £21 million this past summer in a part-exchange deal that saw Erik Lamela move the other way to Sevilla.
But the 20-year-old Spaniard has managed just 50 minutes of Premier League football spread across three separate appearances and is still waiting for his full debut in this competition.
It was unknown as to why Nuno Espirito Santo didn’t use him more in the Premier League but Gil’s revelation that he has been told to gain weight may provide something of a clue.
He told Football London about what’s been asked of him: “I think you can see. I’ve been requested to gain some weight, improve my physical condition and work hard.”
Lightweight
In fairness to Tottenham, they are right.
The Premier League is extremely physical and being only 20 years old, and a bit lightweight, the odds aren’t stacked in Gil’s favour.
He is, however, a supremely-gifted technical football and that’ll stand him in good stead.
But Arsenal were brimming with these during the second half of Arsene Wenger’s career in North London and the fact that they haven’t won a league title since 2004 speaks volumes.
For all your silk, you do need a bit of steel as well and that seems to be the Lilywhites’ aim with Gil.
Nuno’s side are in Europa Conference League action against Mura tomorrow and the young Spaniard will be likely to start that game.
