Paul Merson told Sky Sports News (01/02/21 at 2:10 pm) that ‘it’s wrong’ that Tottenham aren’t allowing Dele Alli to move to PSG.
Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour stated that Alli is set to stay at Spurs beyond today’s deadline. He also added that Alli ‘wanted’ the PSG move and the French club ‘wanted him’ – words which were echoed by Jim White on talkSPORT, this morning.
But it seems as though Spurs cannot find an ideal replacement, so they won’t let him go.
In the summer, it was well-documented that PSG wanted to sign Alli, so that rumour was only going to intensify when Mauricio Pochettino joined the Ligue 1 champions.
Merson stated that if Alli plays against Chelsea on Thursday then he can understand why he didn’t move on Deadline Day, but otherwise, he should be allowed to leave.
“For me, I watched Tottenham last night and how he doesn’t get into that team is beyond me, at the moment,” said Merson. “I don’t know what goes on in the training ground.
“But if everything is alright in the training ground and Dele Alli is working hard then he has to play in that team, especially with Harry Kane’s injury now. No-one runs off the ball.
“If he plays against Chelsea then you hold your hands up and say ‘that’s why you don’t go PSG’. If he doesn’t then I feel for the lad. I really do. This lad has a chance now to go to a massive football club in PSG, and Tottenham are a massive football club I am not saying that, but he wants to play.

“When I hear the reporter then go ‘Tottenham say they need to replace him’. Then they might as well take me. If you are just going to sit on the bench for the next three or six months.
“He’s put his head down. He has got on with his job. I haven’t seen anything in the papers or anything about him moaning. If he starts playing then obviously you don’t go PSG, but if he doesn’t start playing and he’s not allowed to go PSG then I personally think it’s wrong.”

Alli has missed several matchday squads for Tottenham and it’s quite clear that Jose Mourinho isn’t a fan of the player.
Moving to PSG, under a manager he knows well, suits all parties, but it seems as though he will not get his wish.
Not only that, he still would have harboured ambitions to return to the England set-up ahead of the Euros, but that now seems highly unlikely.
