European football expert Gab Marcotti has stated that Arsenal’s call to hand Edu Gaspar the role of the club’s Sporting Director is ‘weird’ and ‘so silly’, as he told ESPN.
It seems as though Edu has been handed a promotion by name and he also becomes the club’s first-ever Sporting Director, but Marcotti doesn’t see a difference in what he was doing already, other than a change in job title.
It has been quite the journey for the former Arsenal player, who just like Mikel Arteta, has been through the mill in north London over the years.
There were occasions when fans were calling for his head, but just like the man in the dugout, he rode through it all and he is now riding that wave.
But when the club decided to hand him the role of Sporting Director just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, European football expert Marcotti was trying to get his head around it all.
“Arsenal have appointed a Sporting Director… and it’s Edu,” said Marcotti. “It’s weird for me because he is already there. This was the job he was doing, right?!
“What’s the difference? Is it a different job title? But it’s so silly. I hope they gave him more money and more power since they changed his title.
“I wondered about this. What was his title before? Now he’s a Sporting Director? (As opposed to the technical director role). Whatever works for you. It shows you can sign Willian and David Luiz, but still come back.”

Whilst Arteta is rightfully getting a lot of plaudits for what he is doing out on the training pitch and having the Gunners sit at the top of the Premier League tree.
