Aidrieonians manager Ian Murray has admitted he would love to bring Kerr Smith back to the club from Scottish Premiership giants Celtic, speaking to the Daily Record.

If McInroy wanted to catch the eye of Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou, the recent arrivals of Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi from Japanese football appear to have put pay to any lingering hopes he might have had of securing a future at the Glasgow giants.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been at Celtic for nearly a decade now and even captained the club at youth level.

But, after failing to make a first-team breakthrough at Parkhead, McInroy admitted before Christmas that this will ‘probably’ be his final year as a Celtic player.

The Scotland U21 international is set to become a free-agent at the end of the current campaign.

McInroy has certainly made a name for himself on loan in the third-tier, however. He’s scored four goals and set up four more for an Airdrie side pushing for promotion to the Championship.

Manager Murray has made no secret of his desire to keep McInroy at the Excelsior Stadium either. And, given his contract situation, he has the ideal opportunity to do just that.

Is Kerr McInroy heading out of Celtic?

“We’re still talking away. We want Kerr back but, without putting pressure on anybody, the ball is his court,” Murray explains.

“It’s as simple as that. I think it is vitally important that Kerr continues his momentum as a footballer and that’s by playing every week.

“The quicker Kerr makes a decision for himself, the better.”

McInroy’s short-term spell at Aidrie came to an end earlier this month. The versatile midfielder should to go out on loan again before becoming a free-agent, though it is not certain at this stage whether he will return to the Lanarkshire.

Celtic, meanwhile, will push McInroy even further down the pecking order with Matt O’Riley joining in a £1.5 million deal from MK Dons.
