Tottenham Hotspur ace Jan Vertonghen will become Belgium’s record cap holder this week when he plays in their World Cup qualifying double header.

The centre-back is understandably attracting wide spread acclaim in his homeland, but no praise will mean more than that which comes from his defensive partner Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld praised his teammate for his consistency, and hailed their strong partnership which has existed at more than once club and at international level.

Speaking to Nieuwsblad, Alderweireld said: “Jan is very proud and I am, he has been playing for so long and earned it twice as much.

“He is a player who always gets a ‘7’ and rarely makes mistakes. I like to play with him. Fortunately, because we played together with Germinal Beerschot, Ajax, Tottenham and the national team.

“I’ve played more games with him than without him. And that is quite unique in both of our careers. We’re going to celebrate that record. Sure.”

Spurs have recently signed defender Davinson Sanchez to make their back line even stronger, playing three at the back, adding serious strength in depth.

Tottenham signed Jan Vertonghen in 2012 from Ajax, beating rivals Arsenal to his signature. It still looks like an inspired piece of business five years on, improving every year.
